What The Last Wagon Is About
A handful of settlers who survive an Apache raid have to trust one man to get them through the desert. That man is Todd: born white, raised for most of his life among the Comanche, and wanted for killing three men, having joined the group in the sheriff's chains. The Turkish summary garbles this setup, when the whole tension of the film comes from it. For a western made in 1956, Delmer Daves is remarkably sympathetic to Native people, as he had been in Broken Arrow. Richard Widmark carries the hardness of the part well.
