What Pride of the Marines Is About
The marine Al Schmid loses his sight in battle and returns home for treatment. The real matter begins after that: he has to contend with what he can no longer do, with looks of pity, and with the fear of becoming a burden to the woman he is to marry. She, for her part, is determined to keep the attachment and waits for him to make his own decision. The film tells the return of servicemen to civilian life not through a medal ceremony but through tension inside a house. It was made in the last year of the war and rests on the story of a real person. John Garfield and Eleanor Parker appear in Delmer Daves’s hundred and nineteen minute American film, completed in 1945.
