Holocaust Escape Tunnel

Ponar is a forest near Vilnius. Mass killings took place there during the Second World War. The Nazis put together a group of eighty people. They forced that group to work. The work had to do with removing traces. The members of the group were chained at night. Some of them began to dig a tunnel. What they dug with were spoons and their hands. The tunnel took about three months. It ran close to thirty metres. It lay some six metres underground. The escape was made on the night of 14 April 1944. That was the last night of Passover. Eighty people went into the tunnel. Eleven of them survived. The tunnel was located in 2016. The search was done with ground penetrating radar. Richard Freund and Jon Seligman led the team. The documentary follows that work, an American production Paula S. Apsell and Kirk Wolfinger released in 2017.
