What Home Before Dark Is About
Charlotte Bronn comes home to her small town after a year in a mental hospital. What put her there was her belief that her husband Arnold was in love with her stepsister, a belief that was classed as delusion. Now she has to live in the same house with the same people, rebuilding herself while knowing that nobody trusts what she says. Mervyn LeRoy made the 1958 film from Eileen Bassing's novel, which she adapted with her husband. Beside Charlotte, played by Jean Simmons, runs a second line: the antisemitism Jake Diamond meets at the college where he teaches alongside Arnold. The film treats both as the work of the same town.
