What Hondros Is About
Chris Hondros photographed the wars of the decade after 11 September, working in conflict zones from Kosovo to Iraq, Liberia to Afghanistan, and became one of the best known names in the trade. The documentary was made by Greg Campbell, his childhood friend and a fellow journalist, who went to the places where the most famous frames were taken, found the people in those photographs and asked what became of them. That turns the film from a career summary into something in which the pictures have lives of their own. It is also about the moment of decision: how a photographer works out in seconds what to shoot and what to leave, and when to put the camera down and step in. Hondros was killed in a mortar attack in Misrata, Libya, in 2011, along with the director Tim Hetherington. The film won the audience award at Tribeca in 2017.
