What Hot Saturday Is About
Ruth, a bank clerk in a small town, is suddenly on everyone’s tongue because of a rumour started by a man she turned down: she is supposed to have spent the night with a womanising visitor from the city. What actually happened was an innocent evening, but the town has no interest in finding that out. The rumour threatens both her job and her engagement, and the film shows how easily a woman’s reputation is handed over to other people’s mouths. William A. Seiter’s Paramount production was adapted from Harvey Fergusson’s 1926 novel. Nancy Carroll plays Ruth, Cary Grant the man from the city and Randolph Scott her fiancé, in Grant’s first leading role. It carries the unbounded ease of the pre-Code years.
