Harshavardhan Kulkarni's 2015 Indian film tells the story of Mandar, who has chased women since adolescence, across three time frames: his childhood, his university years and the present, as he is about to marry. The story is not chronological, and that structure makes plain that the man has never changed. The film does not present its protagonist as a charming rake; what his behaviour does to the women around him is shown openly, and the comedy produces discomfort from that. Gulshan Devaiah plays the part without going on the defensive. Radhika Apte's character is written outside the template. The film's limit is promising a transformation at the end that it has not sufficiently earned. Who it's for: viewers who like Indian independent comedy and unconventional narrative structures. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a likeable protagonist, or avoiding sexual content and depictions of troubling behaviour.
