Nymphomaniac: Vol. I

Lars von Trier's 2013 film follows a man who takes in a woman found injured in the street. She recounts her life in chapters. The telling is constantly interrupted. The film places sexuality inside a structure of confession; the narrative keeps arguing with itself through the listener's commentary. It is the first half of a two-part film. The sexual content is very explicit and separate methods were used for some scenes. Because of the director's earlier statements, some viewers choose to avoid his work. Who it's for: those who like provocative, contested cinema. Who it's not for: viewers troubled by explicit sexual content; the film takes it as its subject throughout.
