In the American south of the 1930s a young woman comes upon a plantation where slavery is still in force and decides to stay and change it. Nobody asked her to. The film is shot on a bare stage: rooms drawn on the floor in chalk, no walls. The narrative questions the person who takes on the rescuer's role right to the end and shows that good intentions on their own settle nothing. Lars von Trier directed. It is the second film of the trilogy that began with Dogville; the lead actor changed and the form stayed the same. A real warning: the film is built on slavery, racism and sexual violence and is meant to provoke. The killing of an animal during filming also caused controversy and one actor left the production over it.
