The Boss of It All

An owner who wants to sell his company has for years invented a boss who does not exist, and now needs someone to play him. He hires an out-of-work actor, who takes the part too seriously. The film keeps the office comedy while drawing attention with its images: the framing decisions were deliberately left to a piece of software, so the compositions are odd and off-balance. The narrative makes that discomfort part of the comedy. Lars von Trier wrote and directed. It is a Danish production and counted among his lightest work. Who it's for: those who like dry office comedy and formal experiment. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the director's hard dramas; this is deliberately small and playful.
