Maurício do Valle What I Am Cuba, the Siberian Mammoth Is About
Critics today regard I Am Cuba as a modern masterpiece. The Cuban Soviet co-production of 1964 was the high point of cultural collaboration between the two countries, yet the film never reached a wide audience and remained forgotten until it was rediscovered as a classic in the 1990s, a rediscovery driven by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Vicente Ferraz goes after that strange history, travelling to Cuba to find the surviving actors and technicians who worked on it. The ninety one minute Brazilian documentary brings back a moment when the revolution was new and Cuban cinema very young, in the words of the people who lived through it.
