I Am Jane Doe

Several American mothers sue Backpage.com, alleging that their middle-school daughters were advertised for sex on the site. The documentary follows those lawsuits and keeps arriving at the same wall: Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields a platform from liability for what its users post. The obstacle is not the evidence. It is the statute. Mary Mazzio directs and Jessica Chastain narrates. After the film, bills were introduced in Congress to narrow Section 230 for exactly this situation, and the argument widened into a general fight about what websites are responsible for.
