What I Am Maris: Portrait of a Young Yogi Is About
Maris Degener is seventeen; she teaches yoga, she writes, and she speaks as someone who has been through a hard period. After anxiety, depression and an eating disorder that threatened her life, she has found a way to recovery that is her own. The documentary follows that way through her own account, through the pictures she draws and the poems she writes; the yoga practice she keeps up is inside the account too. The film does not turn illness into material for a story and offers no easy promise of recovery. The weight of the account lies in how long accepting oneself takes. Laura Vanzee Taylor’s fifty two minute American documentary was completed in 2018.
