I Am Sun Mu

Sun Mu is a painter who left North Korea. The name he uses is a pseudonym; it means without boundaries. His paintings count as political pop art and draw on his own life, on his homeland and on a hope for a united Korea. He has to keep his real identity hidden. A large exhibition planned in Beijing puts that secrecy at risk. The exhibition is shut down by the Chinese and North Korean authorities. The film follows both the painter’s work and that closure. Part of the documentary is done in animation. Adam Sjöberg’s film, a coproduction of the United States, China and Korea, was completed in 2015.
