Jay Bennett G Greg Kot What I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco Is About
Sam Jones's 2002 documentary follows the American band through the recording of their fourth album. It was planned as a documentary about a creative process, but during filming a rupture occurred between the band and their record label, and the documentary recorded it. The label found the album uncommercial and refused to release it; the band bought back the recordings and it came out later by another route. That process became a concrete example of how the music industry worked at the time. A separation inside the band occurs at the same time. Jones does not switch off the cameras or cut the arguments; the result is a record of two collapses filmed at once. It was shot in black and white. Who it's for: those who like music documentaries and are interested in industry history. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the band; the film does not introduce the songs and assumes the context.
