Amanda Shires What Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed Is About
Sam Jones's 2023 documentary follows the singer Jason Isbell through the recording of an album. His wife Amanda Shires plays in the same band. The subject is where the songs come from. Isbell turns his own history of addiction and the strain in his marriage into songs; in the studio sequences the couple's argument happens in front of the camera and the narrative does not cut away. The filming was done during the pandemic. The tone does not keep its distance, and the documentary leaves the uncomfortable moments in. Who it's for: viewers interested in songwriting and music documentary. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know Isbell's music; the documentary assumes the songs.
