What I Heard the Bells Is About
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the most widely read poet in America, living a quiet and ordered life in New England. In 1861 his wife Frances died when her dress caught fire. Henry was burned trying to save her, and for years afterwards he could not write. Two years later his son Charles enlisted without his father's consent and was severely wounded in the war. On Christmas morning 1863 Longfellow wrote the poem Christmas Bells, later set as a carol, which begins by hearing the bells and being unable to believe in peace, and arrives at hope regardless. Joshua Enck's 2022 film tells that story explicitly from within Christian faith; the rebuilding of belief is both its subject and its purpose.
