What A Great Awakening Is About
The film follows the unlikely friendship between the Reverend George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin, and the revival Whitefield set off across the colonies. Franklin printed the sermons and put that voice in front of crowds; the partnership grew less out of shared belief than out of the press and a certain mutual admiration. Joshua Enck’s film is openly faith-driven and treats the awakening as one of the country’s founding moments. One thing it leaves outside the frame: in 1749 Whitefield lobbied Georgia to legalise the slavery the colony had banned, and he owned enslaved people himself in order to fund his orphanage.
