I Think We're Alone Now

Sean Donnelly's 2008 documentary is about two people who say they are in love with the eighties pop singer Tiffany. Jeff is fifty, lives in California and has been going to her concerts for years; Kelly sustained a brain injury in an accident and regards herself as a person in Tiffany's life. The film's ethical position was debated. Both have conditions affecting their mental health and the film knows it; the camera tries not to make them ridiculous, but where the viewer should stand stays unclear. Donnelly does not resolve that. Its strongest quality is showing how ordinary the loneliness is that obsession comes out of. Jeff and Kelly's meeting with each other is the most affecting and the strangest passage in the documentary. Who it's for: those who like unusual portraits and documentaries about obsession. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a clear ethical stance toward the subject; the film leaves that with the audience.
