What Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp Is About
The documentary tells the life of Robert Beck, who from the thirties to the sixties in Chicago put women to work and used violence on them. After a long prison sentence he gave it up, married and wrote seven books under the name Iceberg Slim; the world he described came later to be counted as the beginning of what is called street literature. Ice-T, Snoop Dogg, Chris Rock and Quincy Jones speak in the film, and so does his family. The production was criticised for making pimping look too agreeable and for leaving what was done to the women in the background. Jorge Hinojosa’s eighty nine minute American documentary was completed in 2012.
