What Il posto dell'anima Is About
Three workers at a tyre factory in southern Italy lead the struggle against the American owner who wants to close the Italian branch where they work. The film does not build the strike and the resistance as a story of victory; it shows how decisions are made, who holds out and who gives up. The account does not turn the three workers into a single type, and each has a reckoning of his own. The town’s dependence on the factory forms the ground of the story. The other side stays distant and faceless, which is the account’s own choice. It does not end in a clear winning or losing. Silvio Orlando and Michele Placido appear in Riccardo Milani’s hundred and six minute Italian film, completed in 2003.
