What Piano, Solo Is About

Riccardo Milani's 2007 film tells the short life of the Italian jazz pianist Luca Flores, adapted from Walter Veltroni's book, with Kim Rossi Stuart in the lead. Born in Palermo, Flores spent part of his childhood in Mozambique, where his mother died in a car accident he held himself responsible for, a feeling he carried for the rest of his life. He played with Chet Baker and Dave Holland and was counted among the most original voices in Italian jazz while living with a severe mental illness, and he took his own life in 1995, aged thirty-eight. Milani refuses both the genius legend and the case file, and keeps the music and the pain in the same room.
