What In Her Hands Is About
Zarifa Ghafari became mayor of Maidan Shahr at twenty six and was the youngest woman to hold such a post in Afghanistan. The documentary follows her over two years: she deals with death threats simply to get to her office while working to keep girls in school. Over that same period Western troops withdraw from the country, the Taliban advance, and the question in front of her is no longer what she will do but whether she can stay at all. The film presents her not as a hero but as a person who has to calculate each day one at a time.
