What In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50 Is About
Toby Amies's 2022 documentary approaches King Crimson not through fifty years of history but through the band on tour. The camera enters rehearsals, the bus and the wings; the musicians describe what belonging to the group means. The subject is less the band than its way of working. The order Robert Fripp built is strict; decisions about who stays and who goes can be merciless, and former members say so plainly. Amies is not making a celebration. The questions are uncomfortable, the answers evasive, and some interviews break off. Age, illness and death enter the conversations. Who it's for: those who like progressive rock history and music documentary about tension inside a group. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an account of the discography; the film does not work through the albums in order.
