In the Name of the Land

Pierre is a farmer in his thirties who wants to expand the land he took over from his father. He borrows, builds sheds, and every investment pulls him further under. Édouard Bergeon wrote it from his own father's story, so he knows the collapse from inside. Its best observation is how agricultural debt is experienced as personal failure: the man believes he is incompetent, when the system was built this way from the start. Guillaume Canet plays him quiet and progressively exhausted. Farmer suicides have been a long-running argument in France and the release reopened it. The rural landscape here is not beauty but weight. Who it is for: viewers who want drama about the farming crisis and inheritance within a family. Who it is not for: anyone looking for hope, since the film follows the dead end all the way down.
