This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection

In the mountains of Lesotho, eighty-year-old Mantoa learns her son has died in a mining accident in South Africa. No one is left; she starts arranging her own funeral. Then word comes that the village will be cleared for a reservoir and the burial ground flooded, and something unexpected wakes in her: not a will to live, a will to refuse. Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese stages the film almost as a rite. Long takes, fixed frames, a narrator speaking from outside the story. Mary Twala Mlongo plays Mantoa with gravity and hardness, and the film's whole moral weight sits on her face. It screened in the World Dramatic Competition at Sundance in 2020 and won a Special Jury Award for Visionary Filmmaking. It was Lesotho's first ever submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature, and was not nominated. Who it's for: Viewers drawn to slow cinema, painterly framing, and stories built on land and belonging. Who it's not for: The pace is deliberately heavy and the plot is minimal, which makes it hard going if you need narrative momentum.
