What In the Name of the Law Is About
A young judge is posted to a small town in Sicily. He intends to do the job by the book, but the town has an order of its own: landowners, intermediaries, and an authority nobody will name. When he opens his first murder case, nobody will testify; everyone answers to a different law. Pietro Germi's film is among the first to put the mafia on screen, and it shows it not merely as a criminal organisation but as part of the structure of land ownership. Federico Fellini is among the writers. The storytelling is close to a western: the lone man, the closed town, the train arriving. It is adapted from Giuseppe Guido Lo Schiavo's novel and was argued about in Italy for a long time.
