What The Bandit of Tacca del Lupo Is About
The story is set in southern Italy in the nineteenth century. Near Melfi, in Basilicata, there is a small force of soldiers. That force is fighting bandits in the hills. The bandits have the region under ransom. The film does not build the fighting as an epic of heroism. That the force is small in number, and does not know the ground, is what builds the tension. The clash between the power of the state and the local order is the ground of the account. It is one of the works turned towards history in Italian cinema of 1952. Amedeo Nazzari and Saro Urzì appear in Pietro Germi’s ninety three minute Italian film, completed in 1952.
