What The Birds, the Bees and the Italians Is About
Three separate stories set in Treviso. In the first a husband pretends to be impotent to cover an affair. In the second a bank clerk leaves his wife for his mistress, and every husband in town unites in jealousy to conspire against them. In the third the men of the town all sleep with a young woman, and when her father reveals she is under age they all end up in court. Pietro Germi aims at provincial moralising and hypocrisy, but handles the third story with the ease of its period, which is uncomfortable now. It won the Palme d'Or.
