What In the Pope's Eye Is About
The Pope is troubled that the young are drifting away from religion, and decides the answer is a Vatican television station. To get the channel going, a priest brings in the team from a comedy programme actually running on Italian television at the time. What follows is chaos: sketches in Vatican corridors, songs, familiar faces, and a broadcast that turns everything about the Church into a joke. Renzo Arbore directs, with Roberto Benigni, Isabella Rossellini and Diego Abatantuono. Three weeks after its release in 1980 the film was confiscated by order of a prosecutor, for insulting the Catholic religion and the person of the Pope. That seizure is the main reason it is remembered.
