In the Rearview

A van is moving along the roads of Ukraine. The plates on it are Polish. The driver is taking people out of the war zone. Different people get in each time. Some are old, some are children, some bring an animal. The camera stays inside for the whole journey. The outside is seen through the windows. People begin to talk as they travel. What they tell is what they have left behind. Some of them stay silent for a long time. The van becomes a temporary shelter. Everyone in it wants one thing. To reach somewhere the war cannot get to. The film looks out mostly from inside that vehicle. The eighty four minute documentary carries the signature of Maciek Hamela, a Polish, French and Ukrainian co-production finished in 2023.
