What Into the Mind Is About
Sherpas Cinema spent two years on this mountain film, and it hangs the skiing and snowboarding footage on a question rather than on a season: what pushes people to take risks, how they price fear, what sits at the centre of an addiction to mountains. The shoots run from Bolivia to Nepal to Costa Rica. It is not a straight parade of athlete segments. The edit moves between dream and waking and gathers around one skier climbing an impossible mountain. JP Auclair, Tom Wallisch, Xavier de le Rue, Ingrid Backstrom and Rory Bushfield appear in it, and the slow motion and time-lapse work is generally credited with pushing the visual limits of the genre.
