What Intolerance Is About

Keisuke Yoshida's film opens with a teenage girl, accused of shoplifting, dying in an accident as she runs. Two things then begin at once: the media closing around the case, and the father's rage. He is a hard man who gets on with nobody, and he goes after everyone he holds responsible: the shop manager, the teachers, anyone who saw her. The film does not vindicate him, and it does not clear the people opposite him either, building a picture in which everyone carries a share of responsibility and a share of evasion. What it is really after is how quickly a death turns into a race to find someone to blame. Arata Furuta plays the father and Tori Matsuzaka the shop manager. It is uncomfortable throughout and offers no consolation.
