What Himeanole Is About
Okada, an ordinary man working for a cleaning company, is trying to help a friend with the woman he likes when he realises she is being followed, and that the man following her is someone he knew at school. Up to that point the film moves like a mild comedy, and then it changes tone without warning and goes somewhere very dark; that sudden shift is Keisuke Yoshida’s actual method. It is adapted from Minoru Furuya’s manga. The violence is neither made into a spectacle nor softened, and the question of where an old campaign of bullying eventually leads is left open. Gaku Hamada and Go Morita play the leads.
