What Invisible Waves Is About

Kyoji is a Japanese cook working in Macau. On his boss's orders he kills the woman he has been involved with; she is the boss's wife. He is then told to get out of the city and put on a ship to Phuket. On the voyage and after he arrives, everything goes wrong: his cabin is broken, his money disappears, everyone he meets wants something from him. Kyoji understands that what he did is not going to let go of him. Pen-Ek Ratanaruang uses the shape of a crime story without producing suspense; events proceed slowly, repetitively, in a helplessness close to comedy. Christopher Doyle is the cinematographer, and the ship's corridors and hotel rooms are the images that stay. Tadanobu Asano plays a man who barely reacts to anything, and that choice keeps the film cold. It comes from the same vein as the director's previous film but is more closed and less liked.
