Pan is a young man in the countryside who wants to sing. Called up for military service, he leaves his pregnant wife a transistor radio for company; the army does not suit him, he goes absent without leave and joins a pop troupe. By the time his wife finds him his life is already coming apart. Pen-ek Ratanaruang made the 2001 film from Wat Wanlayangkoon's novel and built it on luk thung, the love music of rural Thailand, so that a bright, colourful, song filled opening turns steadily into something else. It was the first Thai film selected for the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and became the country's Oscar submission that year.
