What Iraq in Fragments Is About
The film is built in three parts, each looking at the country from somewhere else. In Baghdad an eleven-year-old boy without a father tries to grow up under the hard owner of the garage where he works. In two Shia cities, groups loyal to Sadr prepare for regional elections while enforcing their own order in the street at gunpoint. In the north a family of Kurdish farmers welcomes the American presence as a freedom they had not had before. James Longley filmed in Iraq for more than two years. It won three awards at Sundance in 2006, for directing, editing and cinematography, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
