What Island in the Sky Is About
A C-47 transport called the Corsair is forced down in the frozen emptiness of Labrador, and its pilot, Captain Dooley, has to keep his men alive until somebody finds them. Ernest K. Gann wrote the screenplay from his own 1944 novel, and he knew the incident from close up: he served with Air Transport Command and flew on one of the searches. More than that, he had been listed for the flight that went down, and a more senior pilot took his place. William A. Wellman directed, with John Wayne in the lead.
