What Island of Greed Is About
Captain Fong of the justice ministry's investigation bureau and his squad are following a wide criminal network when they come up against Chow: a businessman, the head of a triad, and now a candidate for the legislature who intends to launder his past through office. The distance between crime and politics closes fast. Michael Mak's 1997 Hong Kong film was shot in Taiwan and takes up what was argued about there in the 1990s as black gold politics: candidates with organised crime behind them entering the electoral machinery. It is a fiction and not a record, but it puts that argument on screen as it stood. Andy Lau and Tony Leung Ka-fai face each other across it.
