What Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet Is About
Isoroku Yamamoto was commander-in-chief of the Japanese navy. He had lived in America, seen its industry, and said that a war with the United States would be lost. He opposed the Tripartite Pact as well. He nonetheless drew up the plan for the attack on Pearl Harbor and gave the order for it. The film sets those two sides of him next to each other: a man conducting a war that had already been decided while knowing from the start how it ended. When American fighters shot down his aircraft in 1943 the course of the war was long since clear. Izuru Narushima directs the Japanese film; a hundred and thirty-five minutes, with Koji Yakusho as Yamamoto. It was made near the seventieth anniversary of the war, and it sits where Japanese films about this period often sit: holding the hero apart from the war. Yamamoto was against the war; he also designed the attack.
