What It Rains in My Village Is About
In a remote Yugoslav village a man who keeps pigs sets out to protect a young woman with an intellectual disability, and the men of the village marry the two of them off. Not long after, a teacher arrives to teach the women to paint and the balance that had been struck comes apart; the crop duster pilot, the village fool and the teacher all enter the same story. The account is set in 1968, in the days when the Soviet army entered Czechoslovakia, and it ties the violence inside the village to the political events outside. Aleksandar Petrović’s eighty four minute Yugoslav French co-production was partly inspired by Dostoevsky’s novel Demons. Annie Girardot and Ivan Palúch appear; it was completed in 1968.
