What Three Is About
A film in three parts, following one Yugoslav man through three separate moments of the Second World War. In the first he is only a witness to what happens, in the second he is the one being hunted, and in the third he is the man who decides on an execution. Aleksandar Petrović puts the same person in all three positions and leaves the heroic register of war stories out entirely; the question he raises is how much of where anyone stands is ever a choice. He drew the script from stories by the writer Antonije Isaković. The film took the top prize at Karlovy Vary, played the New York Film Festival in 1966 and was nominated for the foreign-language Oscar. Velimir Živojinović takes the lead.
