Jaco

Jaco Pastorius was a self-taught musician who took the electric bass out of the rhythm section and put it at the front, redefining both the sound of the instrument and what it was for. The documentary covers his beginnings in Florida, the Weather Report years, and the period when he was confident enough to introduce himself as the greatest bass player in the world. What came afterwards is reported with the same honesty. Paul Marchand and Stephen Kijak directed it together, with Metallica's bassist Robert Trujillo producing. Previously unseen eight-millimetre home movies, photographs and audio recordings are used. Joni Mitchell, Wayne Shorter, Sting, Flea and Bootsy Collins are among those talking. The film leaves his mental illness and his addiction as they were, without turning either into legend.
