What Jar City Is About

An old man is found dead in a basement flat in Reykjavik, and a photograph left at the scene sends the detective Erlendur back to a rape case that was buried thirty years ago. As the work goes on, the story stops being about one killing and becomes about what genetic records mean in a country small enough that everybody is related to everybody. Baltasar Kormákur adapted it from Arnaldur Indriðason's 2000 novel Mýrin, and Iceland submitted the film for the foreign language Oscar. The landscape here is not scenery; it carries most of the weight.
