A wealthy Indian family living in America has twin sons, and the father insists the twins marry twin sisters. Prashanth falls in love with Aishwarya in Madras; she has no twin. To keep the family from finding out, she starts behaving as two different people. The subject is not love but the strange lie built to satisfy a symmetry the family demands. The film pushes the idea all the way and the situation grows steadily more absurd; the comedy comes from that excess. The form is built on spectacle. It is among the most visually extravagant of Shankar's films; the song sequences were shot around the world and one of them is built directly on the seven wonders, a monument on each continent inside a single song. That passage is what the film is remembered for and represented an extraordinary production cost at the time. It was submitted as India's Oscar entry that year. A. R. Rahman wrote the music and the songs succeeded independently of the film. Prashanth plays the twins and Aishwarya Rai the girl, with Nassar as the father. Who it is for: viewers who like nineties Tamil popular cinema and large song sequences. Who it is not for: anyone after narrative coherence; the plot is entirely a pretext and the film runs close to three hours.
