Jenin, Jenin

Mohammad Bakri's 2003 documentary was made after the military operation in the Jenin refugee camp in 2002. The camera moves through demolished neighbourhoods and speaks with the people still there. The documentary consists entirely of testimony. There is no narrator; the elderly, children and medical workers describe what they saw. Bakri is a Palestinian actor and director and does not conceal his position. The film has been the subject of legal and political dispute since its release. Its screening was blocked in Israel, the decision was overturned in court, and later suits led to it being banned again; the accuracy of some of the accounts was argued in court and rejected. Who it's for: those who follow Palestinian cinema and testimony from conflict zones. Who it's not for: viewers expecting verified reporting from both sides; the film is a one-sided collection of testimony and its content has been contested in law.
