Didier Sauvegrain What Joan the Maid II: The Prisons Is About
Jeanne has lifted the siege of Orléans and Charles has been crowned king of France. But she is wounded in the attempt on Paris and her position at court weakens; then she falls into enemy hands and is put on trial. This second half is about the captivity and the trial, where what is at stake is no longer a war but an interrogation room, a lock and a bargaining over the inviolability of her body. Jacques Rivette’s second part runs 176 minutes, and the two films together pass five and a half hours. Sandrine Bonnaire plays Jeanne. Rivette builds the saint not from miracles but from daily work, exhaustion and the answers she gives to questions; the camera looks for the ordinary rather than the extraordinary.
