Wuthering Heights

The account is set in the south of France in the nineteen thirties. The region is the Cévennes. The farms there stand miles apart. Roch is an orphan. The wealthy Earnshaw family takes him in. Their house is called Hurlevent. He grows up there beside Cathy. A strong bond forms between them. It looks unbreakable. Then social expectation gets in the way. Cathy puts her feelings down and marries Lindon, a man of means who suits her standing. Roch swears to win her back. The account comes from Emily Brontë’s novel, of which Rivette uses only the first half, adding dream sequences of his own. Fabienne Babe and Lucas Belvaux appear in the hundred and twenty six minute film, a French production Jacques Rivette finished in 1985.
