What John Lewis: Good Trouble Is About
Dawn Porter's 2020 documentary is about the congressman John Lewis. Lewis was at the front of the marches in the sixties and gave the rest of his life to the question of voting rights. The argument is that the struggle is not over. Present-day voting rules are set beside the archive footage; the narrative shows how gains once made can be taken back. Lewis watches his own archive on camera. Many figures from Congress and beyond speak. The documentary is not critical; it argues for its subject. Who it's for: viewers of American civil rights history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a detached portrait; the documentary openly takes a side.
