What Johnny Tremain Is About
Johnny Tremain, apprenticed to a silversmith in Boston, injures his hand and can no longer work at the trade. He finds a new place among the Sons of Liberty. He starts as a messenger and ends up inside the best known events of the period: the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere's night ride, and the opening fighting of the war. This Walt Disney production was adapted from Esther Forbes's novel, which won the Newbery Medal in 1944. It was prepared for television but reached cinemas first. It was Robert Stevenson's first live-action feature for Disney; he would go on to make some of the studio's most famous pictures. It tells the history at a pace children can follow, without avoiding what the events cost.
